Don’t forget to read the fine print…

Illustration student Rachel Walsh designed a visual metaphor to explain the Kindle Reader to Charles Dickens. I feel like he might get caught up in the problem of how to read such tiny print, but I bet he’d get it eventually. I like the idea of being able to carry so many books without the weight, but I just can’t get past my love of books as artifacts. For me, holding them in my hands and feeling the paper is part of the charm. Also, it’s hard enough to remember to plug in the phone and the ipod ever day (I’m a bit absent-minded). At least my trusty paperback is always ready to go. On the other hand, I read somewhere that kids don’t differentiate between looking at a screen and watching tv and looking at a screen and reading, so the increasing numbers of kids with e-readers means more kids are reading – and more importantly, replacing tv watching with reading.

I wonder what Dickens would think of Catcher in the Rye…
